It shows straight away when a lesson is improvised: the explanation drags, time runs short or long, and students switch off because there is no clear thread. Preparing the session is not filling in an official form, it is thinking beforehand what you want them to learn and how you will get there, so the hour in class flows instead of lurching along. A good lesson plan gives you the calm of knowing what comes next at every moment.
This template walks through the pieces of a well-built session, from the learning objective to assessment. It works for any subject and level because the structure is the same: an opening that hooks, a main explanation, practice and a close. Breaking it into steps means you stop preparing from memory and make sure no part goes unthought, including the timing, which is the first thing to slip out of control.
The pieces of a well-built session
These are the steps the template brings, in the order it makes sense to prepare them:
- Define the learning objective, concrete and measurable
- Choose the topic and the level it is aimed at
- Prepare the materials you are going to need
- Design the opening activity to spark interest
- Plan the main explanation with clear examples
- Create practice exercises to cement what was covered
- Prepare a closing activity that sums up the session
- Decide how to assess whether the objective was met
- Estimate the time for each part so it fits the hour
- Review the full plan before walking into class
How it works in Foco
When you import it, Foco creates the "Teaching" workspace with these tasks in the List view. You tick each piece off as you get it ready and see at a glance how much is left before the session is built. In each task's duration you can note the minutes you plan for that part, so the total tells you whether it fits the hour before you walk in.
Since lessons repeat year after year, turn on recurrence to reuse the same outline each week without recreating it. You can set a reminder the day before to check the materials, and leave a voice note with that opening-activity idea that comes to you on the way to school.
