A research paper intimidates because you look at it as one impossible block instead of what it is, a sum of small steps. That fear is exactly what makes it get put off until three days are left and you write in a panic, with no time to read the sources properly or check the style. It shows in the result: weak arguments, misplaced citations and a conclusion written at three in the morning.

This template breaks the paper into the real stages every piece of research follows, from choosing a topic to submitting. Seeing it this way you stop facing a monster and start closing concrete tasks one after another. It works for a high-school assignment, a university essay or an article, because the method does not change: first you research and organize, and only then you write.

From a blank topic to submission

These are the steps the template brings, in the natural order of research:

  • Choose a topic that interests you and gives enough to write about
  • Frame the research question that will guide everything
  • Find and read reliable sources on the topic
  • Take notes and cite each idea with its origin
  • Make an outline with the order of the sections
  • Write the draft without stopping to correct
  • Write the intro and conclusion last, once everything is clear
  • Review the bibliography and the citation format
  • Fix style and spelling in a separate read
  • Submit the paper with time to spare before the deadline

How it works in Foco

When you import it, Foco creates the "Research" workspace with these tasks in the List view, grouped by date into Today, This week and Later. You set the submission date as the target and spread the steps across the weeks before it, so the paper stops being a mountain and becomes a manageable task each day. You tick each step off as you finish and see the real progress.

You can set a reminder for the key dates, like the day you want the draft done, and use each task's text note to store links to sources or loose quotes without leaving the app. If you do the research as a group, assign each section to a person so it is clear who has what.
