Book writing

Writing a book is above all about not giving up before you finish it. Most manuscripts stall not from a lack of talent but because the writer loses sight of how much is done and how much is left, and the feeling of forever being halfway up a mountain with no summit ends up weighing more than the desire to write. Seeing the work split into concrete chapters that shift from column to column turns that mountain into a count of steps you actually can finish.

This board splits the road into the four stages every book goes through, from outline to a manuscript ready for someone to read. Each card can be a chapter or a whole phase, depending on how you work. The powerful part is the visual: when you drag a chapter from Draft to Revision you see the book truly grow, and that visible progress is what keeps you sitting down to write day after day.

Four stages of the manuscript

The board carries your book from outline to the end across four columns:

Outline

Before writing a line, knowing what it is about and how it is ordered. This base saves you dead ends.

• Define the core idea that holds the book together
• Sketch the chapters and their order

Draft

The longest phase and where a book truly gets written. The golden rule is to move forward without stopping to correct.

• Write the first chapter to get the engine going
• Move chapter by chapter without looking back

Revision

With the whole draft in front of you, it is time to reread with cold eyes and improve what came out rough.

• Reread and correct the whole manuscript
• Polish the style and the consistency

Finished

The book is done and ready to leave your hands. A good outside reader sees what you no longer can.

• Send for reading to someone you trust

How it works in Foco

When you import the template, Foco creates the "Book" workspace with these four columns and each chapter as a card. On desktop you drag the card from Draft to Revision as you finish; on mobile you switch columns with the tabs at the top. Each card takes a target date to set yourself a pace, and a voice note to capture a scene idea or a twist that comes to you away from the keyboard.
