Moving house template

Moving looks like one job, but it is really dozens of small errands spread over several weeks, and most of them depend on each other. You book the van, but first you need to know how many boxes there are; you cancel the electricity, but not before the real move-out date. When all of that lives only in your head, something always gets left out, and it tends to be the thing you discover on moving day itself.

This template lays the move out as a single path, from bookings and change-of-address notices to unpacking the essentials on your first night. It works for someone moving alone who wants to forget nothing, and for a couple or family who need to split the work so two people do not do the same task while nobody does the important one.

The steps of the move

These are the tasks the template brings, in the order it makes sense to tackle them:

• Book a moving company or van early, ideally on a weekday
• Get boxes and packing materials (tape, paper, markers)
• Transfer or cancel utilities (power, water, internet) with exact dates
• Update your address (bank, work, mail)
• Pack room by room so nothing gets mixed up
• Label boxes by room and contents
• Confirm date and time with the movers a few days ahead
• Clean the old place before handing back the keys
• Inspect the new place on arrival
• Unpack the essentials for the first night (bed, bathroom, chargers)
